Will we see you at our Ash Wednesday Service at 6:30pm on March 2nd? I’ve designed an experience that will engage all of your senses, inviting deep reflection about the meaning of Ash Wednesday and the scriptural context in which we encounter the phrase, “You are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
One component of the service that I’m particularly excited about is an exercise in manuscript illumination. In a time before most people could read, when church services and scripture were in Latin, illustrations and decorative flourishes accompanied text on a page - creating an Illuminated Manuscript.
Here is a Medieval example, as well as a contemporary example.
During our Ash Wednesday service, you will have an opportunity to illuminate your own manuscript. There will be different printed text selections for you to choose from along with a variety of art materials to add whatever flourishes and illustrations you’d like. It can be as simple as swatches of color, or as complex as the garden of Eden. If you’re not comfortable getting creative, alternative activities will be available.
All the art materials have been purchased second hand from ScrapsKC to help minimize waste!
